Regional Historical Context

Tavakli history

The region of Çanakkale has been shaped by centuries of settlement and migration. Turkic tribes, including the Danishmend, arrived in the area from the 11th century onwards, laying the foundations for the communities of western Anatolia, including the settlements around Ezine.

Immigration from the Balkans and Population Settlement

Tavakli history

A major demographic change occurred in the late 19th century after the Russo-Turkish War of 1877–1878. Many Muslim refugees from the Balkans settled in Anatolia, and the Ottoman administration redistributed land to accommodate them. Nearby villages in Ezine were founded or repopulated under this policy.

While Tavaklı itself is not documented as a formal settlement for Balkan refugees, the broader pattern of migration influenced the region, shaping its demographic and cultural landscape.

Cultural Legacy and Landscape

The mix of long-standing local populations and immigrant families has created a rich cultural tapestry in the area. Traditions, practices, and rural lifestyles reflect both the historical communities and the influence of migrants over the centuries.

The village’s geography and fertile land continue to shape livelihoods, with agriculture, including olive cultivation, remaining central to the local economy.
