Tavaklı Village

History, Landscape and Rural Life in the Aegean Hinterland

Historical Background

The wider landscape surrounding Tavaklı has long been associated with the name Larissa. A proven archaeological site of interest identified as Larissa lies near the neighbouring village of Kösedere, confirming ancient settlement activity across this part of the Ezine hinterland. The name Larissa appears to have been used not only for a specific site but also more broadly to describe the surrounding region.

Tavaklı’s own clearly traceable history begins in the Ottoman period. The village developed as an agricultural community, deliberately established inland to provide permanence, access to arable land and a degree of security, while still maintaining a practical connection to the coast via Tavaklı İskelesi. Evidence of Tavaklı’s status during Ottoman times survives in the village graveyard, where finely carved gravestones indicate families of wealth, education and social influence, some of whom are known to have completed the pilgrimage to Mecca.

Location and Geography

Tavaklı is located 74 km from Çanakkale and 24 km from Ezine, positioned between the edge of the Sakar Mountain and the Aegean Sea, approximately 3 km inland from the coast. The village stands at an elevation of around 200 metres above sea level, giving it open views across surrounding farmland.

The coastal area is known as Tavaklı İskelesi. Although there is no longer a functioning port, this area once played a role in local trade, particularly in the export of oak acorns, which were historically used in paint production. Today, Tavaklı İskelesi features several guest houses, a few hotels and small restaurants along the shoreline.

Climate and Population

The climate is temperate, and generally more comfortable than that of Turkey’s southern coast, where summer temperatures can become extreme. According to the latest census figures from 2020, Tavaklı has a recorded population of 573 residents, a figure that includes permanent residents of Tavaklı İskelesi. In practice, the village population itself is estimated to be around 250 to 300 people at any given time.

Olives

Agriculture and Local Economy

Agriculture remains the mainstay of the local economy. For many years, oak acorns were harvested for use in paint production, but this practice has largely ceased following the introduction of synthetic paints. Over time, the village’s agricultural emphasis shifted towards olive oil production.

The surrounding land is largely uneven and well suited to olive trees. Olive oil production provides an important seasonal income, supported by three olive oil factories within the village, where olives are harvested and processed on the same day. Researchers have identified Tavaklı olives as being among the highest quality for olive oil production.

Tomatoes

In addition to olives, the area produces tomatoes, peppers and aubergines, which thrive in the local climate. A variety of fruit is also grown, including apricots, plums, pears, peaches and figs, most of which are cultivated for local use. Honeydew and watermelon are produced, along with smaller quantities of cauliflower, beans, wheat, broad beans and chickpeas.

Vineyards once formed part of the local agricultural landscape, although today grapes are more commonly found in household gardens and grown for personal consumption. Cattle, sheep and goat farming also take place, though on a smaller scale compared with other villages in and around Ezine.

Daily Life and Infrastructure

Despite its proximity to the sea, the absence of a port or pier suitable for fishing boats means that fishing does not play a major role as an industry. There are summer houses in and around Tavaklı, along with several social establishments that provide employment opportunities and contribute to making the village an attractive place to live.

Although Tavaklı is not a major tourist destination, the area benefits from local tourism during the summer months. The sea remains unpolluted, with clear waters that are particularly appealing for swimming.

The village has a primary school, although it is currently closed, with pupils attending school in Uluköy. Tavaklı has a functioning water and sewage system, a health centre, and two grocery shops (bakkals). A tarmac road connects the village directly to the coast.

Tavaklı in Context

From a historical perspective, Tavaklı sits within a landscape rich in ancient sites and places of interest. The village is best understood as part of a broader historical geography, linking the ancient Larissa region, Ottoman rural society, and the modern Aegean village. For those interested in understated history and authentic rural continuity, Tavaklı offers insight into a way of life that has changed remarkably little over centuries.

Tavaklı is never ever called “Tavuklu” or any other names. It was a joke between the foreign people who have got a beach house around the Tavaklı Village.

Is Tavaklı Larissa? It is a guess made by an historian on his book wıthin a few sentence but there is no prof for that. Also someone guess That Tavaklı might be Colonai too. But there is no prof for that too.
